Namuna – large hand-etched mango wood tray, natural

Fifty-five centimetres of solid mango wood, etched by hand into a sunburst of concentric rings. The Namuna earns its place on the table before anything is set down on it, and the raised rim runs the whole way round so glasses, jars and breakfast things stay gathered together. Each piece is cut from solid timber, so grain and tone shift from one tray to the next.

• Hand-etched radiating geometric pattern worked into solid mango wood
• 55cm diameter x 2.5cm high
• 1.83kg
• Rim raised around the full circumference
• Natural colour — the open grain and tonal variation of the wood are left visible
• Food safe
• Made in India
• Care: warm soapy water to wash, then rinse and dry straight away
• Work an edible oil — olive or walnut, for instance — into the surface with a cloth to nourish and protect the wood; oiling may darken the tone

It is food safe, so bread and fruit can go straight onto the wood. Wash it in warm soapy water, dry it at once, and work in a little olive or walnut oil from time to time.
